Port Macquarie Koala Hospital President Sue Ashton said a lightning strike on Friday in a forest in New South Wales state, incited a raging wildfire. This wildfire incinerated around 5000 acres in North Sydney, two-third of which was home to koalas.
Conservationist of Canberra fears that flocks of Koalas have lost their life in the raging wildfire. The Australian wildfire season has made an early and pernicious entry in the southern hemisphere spring. This was the result of above average temperature and below average rainfall which also caused east coast drought.
Koalas are mostly seen in coastal forests which are deforested for the accommodation of bourgeoning population. Ashton said that the koala colony was well bred and genetically diverse. These koalas have survival instinct to climb into high trees during raving wildfires.
Ashton is anticipating that wildlife care-givers are permitted to search and rescue the survivors stranded in the affected zones.
