Mohiniyattam: transformation to reality and to empowerment, Sangeetha Iyer

Sangeetha, a passionate Mohiniyattam performer opened her memories, experiences, ups and downs in life during an exclusive interview to The World Women News.

Sangeetha had a tough fight and a commendable comeback from the challenges imposed on her early phase of married life which could make a transition after a long mind battle of 14 years.

Things were not easy and the work life had rendered boldness, exposure to the living world, and financial stability to match the lines of passion and responsibilities.

At times, there would be real tug of war to align the pace and flow in life, where isolation, commitment to talent, gears confidence and strength for real-time empowerment.

Sangeetha was born in Kalpathy, in Palakkad, Kerala. Her mother Lakshmi Balasubramanyam introduced Sangeetha Iyer to dance at a very young age. She completed Junior and Senior exams in Bharatanatyam conducted by the secondary education board. She is trained in Bharatanatyam by Smt. Vani Kowshik and Shri Prakash Iyer. She was blessed to have initial training under Smt. Kalamandalam Premalatha and Smt Kalamandalam Usha. She was trained in Mohiniyattam by Smt. Kalamandalam Hymavathy, Retd professor and the Dept. head for Mohiniyattam of Kerala Kalamandalam.

She learnt Kathakali under Shri. Kalamandalam Soman, disciple of Kalamandalam Ramankutty Ashan. Apart from dancing she enjoys acting and has done various Malayalam stage plays and received The Best Actress Award for the play Avarthana Virasam. She organised Mohini Nrithyathi in Bangalore for Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy in the year 2012 -13. She also had organised many festivals and camps for South Zone Cultural Centre Thanjavur in Bangalore. She has choreographed varnams, padams, Javali, and keerthanas of Shri, Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, Shri Purandara Dasa, and Muthu Swamy Deekshidar. Her production includes Shakuntalam of Kalidasa, Krishnarpanam, Dasara Mahime, compositions of Purandara dasa, Vamana Avatharam from Narayaneeyam, Keshadi Padam form Narayaneeyam, Ganga Gowri Samvadam, and a production on Padmanabha swamy temple which was very much appreciated by the audience. She has programmed Advaitham taken from Adi Shankaracharya’s compositions shiva bhujangam, Vishnu bhujangam and Mathru Panchakam and the theme was dedicated to the entire motherhood. She specializes in Theme based productions. Sangeetha Iyer is the founder of Mudra-an Institute for Indian Classical Dances and Music.

Sangeetha, is a true pet lover, especially her love and care for sheltering street dogs make her a real human being. She also runs a pet hostel in Thiruvananthapuram, more to adopt pets for deserving pet mates.
